Club Board Orientations

Your club elects its Board which will normally have a President, vice president and sometimes a second vice president, a treasurer, secretary and some directors.  Some of the Board members may not be familiar with Board or Zonta procedures.  An orientation prior to the first Board meeting helps with the efficiency of meetings.

 Resources

The Zonta Club Manual has much information of value.  See http://www.zonta.org/site/PageServer?pagename=mr_club_manual which includes a section on the Club Board and its responsibilities.

A review of the section in the Zonta Club Manual on Club Meetings will help members   to make a useful contribution to the business of the Club.

The club board members need to have an in-depth knowledge of Zonta.  In addition to an iteration of the Zonta International Mission, Objects and Structure which should be understood by all Board members there is a chart illustrating the structure of the organization on page 19.

A wealth of information about  the Zonta International Foundation appears at www.zonta.org,  You will find descriptions of the  Amelia Earhart Fellowship Fund, Women in Business Scholarship Fund, Young Women in Public Affairs Fund, International Service Fund and  Zonta International Strategies to Prevent Violence Against Women Fund, the Rose Fund and the World Headquarters Property Preservation and Improvement Fund. You can also reach descriptions of out International Service Projects through the District 2 website http://www.zontadistrict2.org/zontadownloads.htm

Part of the orientation will relate to the biennial goals of Zonta International which can be found in materials of the previous Convention and the first issue of The Zontian for the biennium. They are intended to provide the framework within which districts and clubs shall develop their own biennial goals, taking into account the need for alignment and focus within the context of Zonta International’s mission while responding to local needs.

Although the orientation for the Board will normally be led by the President, she may ask for advice from members of the Leadership Institute or from past Presidents of the Club.

Membership Recruitment

Although all Zontians are expected to participate in the recruitment of new members, the lead for planning and actions is normally taken by the chairman of the club’s Organization, Membership and Classification Committee.  At the District level, the Lieutenant Governor has a special responsibility for recruitment and retention.

 Resources:

  1. The Zonta International By laws provide all necessary information about the qualifications for membership.

  2. The Marian deforest Membership & Classification Manual (12/03) is a useful tool for identifying strategies and  tools to assist clubs in their membership recruitment and retention efforts.

  3. The Zonta International website has many additional suggestions for attracting new members.  Go to www.Zonta.org, then click on Membership Resources, click on Tools for Clubs, and finally click on Membership Recruitment and Retention.  You will find suggestions for Membership Planning, Methods of Recruitment, and a new PowerPoint presentation for prospective Zontians.  The site also provides some models of success and lists appropriate manuals.

  4.  Articles in the Zontian.  Some of these have been identified on the ZI website.

  5.  Assistance is available from the Leadership Institute.
