Succession Planning – A
How To
Clubs that fail to plan for the timely and effective filling of
their leadership roles are often caught off guard. The result of
not preparing members to assume new and more challenging leadership
roles is often a lack of said members willing to step forward when
needed. Effectively managing leadership succession requires a
systematic approach.
Here are some thoughts on fulfilling your club’s leadership
succession needs:
-
Recognize the need to plan for your future leadership,
rather than leaving it to chance
-
Ensure that your club has a good orientation and
mentoring programs in-place
-
Clearly articulate your club’s leadership needs by
studying the current composition of the Board of Directors to
determine current skills and experience.
-
Identify skills and experience needed on the board.
This is also important for committee chairmen
-
Consider vice-chairs or co-chairs for all committees to
ensure on-going training and leadership development
-
Develop an information sheet for potential directors
and officers that clearly states the duties and time commitments
required of each position
-
Periodically evaluate the performance of the Board, and determine
the level of satisfaction of directors with their Board
responsibilities
-
Ensure that the club nominating committee is actively involved in
succession planning by identifying potential candidates and creating
a pool of current and future nomination
-
Encourage all members to submit candidates to the committee for
consideration
-
Nurturer and maintain a participatory environment on the Board of
Directors by all club members
-
Develop and implement additional educational programs for directors
and committee chairmen as needed
-
Conduct an annual club self-assessment to see how your planning,
training, and overall processes are working
Clubs that plan for their leadership of tomorrow ensure fulfilled
members by continually challenging them and increasing their
leadership repertoire. In addition, the club benefits from strong,
willing leaders.
