A panel, consisting of past presidents from the Zonta Club of Glens Falls, recently honored one of its members as Zontian of the year. Selection is based on service, support and participation by a Zonta member during the past year. Member Irene Consolagio was selected as our Zontian of the year for her unending energy and support to the club. A very active member, Irene has been a great source of inspiration on the many committees she has served on.
Zonta is a worldwide service organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women. It is a non-partisan and non-sectarian organization with ethnic and geographic diversity. Zonta International has nearly 33,000 members, in 1,254 clubs, in 67 countries; which provides many opportunities for networking and fellowship.
Zonta was organized in November 1919 in Buffalo, New York. The Glens Falls club was established in November 1924, with 20 members and now boasts over 60 very active members. Locally Zonta uses fundraisers such as the Zonta Country Fair and the Zonta Women’s Golf Tournament to support many community service projects. Funds raised provide over $7000 each year in local scholarships, Women's Heart Health Project in conjunction with the Glens Falls Hospital and the Uniquely You Boutique located in the Glens Falls Hospital. Money raised by the Country Faire is used to fund local scholarships and community service projects.
The Zonta Country Faire is held the same weekend as the LARAC (Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council) festival which is located nearby in the City Park. The LARAC festival attracts 30,000 people. Zonta International Unites to Say NO to Violence Against Women!
Preventing and ending violence against women and girls is a top priority for Zonta International and its 32,000 members in more than 1,200 Zonta clubs around the globe. Through the Zonta International Strategies for Violence Against Women (ZISVAW) program, Zonta International has assisted victims of violence and human trafficking around the globe by: raising awareness of, and improving education about, violence against women; promoting and enforcing local laws and policies that protect women and victims of violence; and providing medical, legal, rehabilitation and reintegration services for survivors of violence. Locally, Zonta clubs dedicate time and resources to supporting projects that prevent violence against women and support victims of violence in their communities.
Zonta International joins UNIFEM in asking members and friends of Zonta around the world to join the global call to make ending violence against women worldwide a top priority.
